How to Make an Americano at Home: 3 Easy Ways
An Americano is my everyday morning coffee. It is bold like espresso but smooth and easy to sip like a regular cup of coffee, and it has almost no calories if you drink it black. For years I thought I needed an expensive machine to make one at home. It turns out you do not. In this post I will show you how I make an Americano with an espresso machine, a Moka pot and an AeroPress, plus how to make a great iced Americano.
Quick answer: To make an Americano coffee, brew a double shot of espresso (about 2 oz or 60 ml) and add 4 to 6 oz (120 to 180 ml) of hot water, just off the boil. The usual ratio is 1 part espresso to 2 or 3 parts water. If you want to keep more crema on top, pour the espresso over the hot water instead.
The whole thing takes less than 5 minutes, and you can adjust the strength to exactly how you like it.
What Is an Americano?
An Americano (short for Caffè Americano) is espresso mixed with hot water. The water makes the espresso less intense, so you get a drink that is similar in strength to regular brewed coffee but with the rich, deep flavor of espresso.
The popular story is that American soldiers in Italy during World War II found espresso too strong, so they added hot water to make it taste more like the coffee they drank at home. That is how it got the name.
The Americano Ratio

There is no single “right” ratio, but this is where I suggest you start:
| Strength | Espresso | Hot water | Ratio |
| Strong | 2 oz (60 ml) | 2 oz (60 ml) | 1 to 1 |
| Classic | 2 oz (60 ml) | 4 oz (120 ml) | 1 to 2 |
| Mild | 2 oz (60 ml) | 6 oz (180 ml) | 1 to 3 |
I usually drink mine at 1 to 2. Start there and add more water if it tastes too strong.
Water temperature: Use water that is hot but not boiling, around 195 to 205°F (90 to 96°C). If you do not have a thermometer, boil the kettle and let it sit for about 30 seconds.
Method 1: Americano with an Espresso Machine
This is the classic way, and it gives you the best crema.
You need: 18g of freshly ground espresso beans (about 2 tbsp) and 4 oz (120 ml) of hot water.
- Heat your cup. Fill your mug with hot water for a minute, then pour it out. A warm mug keeps your coffee hot longer.
- Grind and tamp. Grind the beans fine, fill your portafilter, and press it down evenly.
- Pull a double shot. Brew about 2 oz (60 ml) of espresso. It should take 25 to 30 seconds.
- Add hot water. Pour 4 oz (120 ml) of hot water into your warm mug, then pour the espresso on top. Many machines also have a hot water spout you can use.
- Taste and adjust. Add more water if you want it milder.
Method 2: Americano with a Moka Pot
A Moka pot does not make true espresso, but it makes a strong, rich coffee that works really well for an Americano. This is how I made my coffee for years before I bought a machine.
- Fill the bottom chamber with hot water up to the safety valve.
- Fill the basket with medium fine ground coffee. Level it off but do not press it down.
- Screw the pot together and put it on medium heat.
- When you hear a gurgling sound and the top chamber is full, take it off the heat.
- Pour about 2 oz (60 ml) of the coffee into a mug and add 3 to 4 oz (90 to 120 ml) of hot water.
Method 3: Americano with an AeroPress
The AeroPress is cheap, small and great for travel. It makes a strong, espresso style coffee.
- Put a paper filter in the cap and rinse it with hot water.
- Add 18g (about 2 tbsp) of fine ground coffee to the chamber.
- Pour in 2 oz (60 ml) of hot water and stir for 10 seconds.
- Wait 30 seconds, then press down slowly and steadily into your mug.
- Top up with 4 oz (120 ml) of hot water.
No equipment at all? You can use instant espresso powder. Stir 1 to 2 tsp into 2 oz (60 ml) of hot water, then add another 4 oz (120 ml). It is not quite the same, but it works in a pinch.
How to Make an Iced Americano?
This is my go to drink on hot days.
- Fill a tall glass with ice.
- Pour in 4 oz (120 ml) of cold water.
- Brew a double shot of espresso and pour it straight over the top.
- Stir and enjoy. Add a splash of milk or simple syrup if you like.
Tip: Freeze leftover coffee in an ice cube tray. Coffee ice cubes keep your iced Americano from getting watery.
Americano vs Other Coffee Drinks
People mix these up all the time, so here is a simple way to see the difference:
| Drink | What is in it | Taste |
| Americano | Espresso plus hot water | Bold but smooth, no milk |
| Long black | Hot water with espresso poured on top | Stronger, more crema |
| Drip coffee | Hot water slowly poured through ground coffee | Lighter, less body |
| Latte | Espresso plus lots of steamed milk and a little foam | Creamy and mild |
| Cappuccino | Espresso with equal steamed milk and foam | Rich and foamy |
Americano vs drip coffee: They look almost the same in the cup, but an Americano has a richer, deeper flavor with a little crema on top. Drip coffee is lighter and more mellow.
Americano vs long black: Both are espresso and water. The only difference is the order. For a long black, the espresso goes on top of the water, which keeps more crema and makes it taste a bit stronger. The long black is popular in Australia and New Zealand.
How Much Caffeine Is in an Americano?
A single shot of espresso has about 63 mg of caffeine, so an Americano made with a double shot has about 125 mg. That is a little more than an average 8 oz (240 ml) cup of drip coffee, which has about 95 mg. Adding more water does not change the caffeine, only the strength of the taste.
My Tips for a Better Americano
- Use freshly roasted beans. Beans taste best within a few weeks of the roast date printed on the bag.
- Grind right before brewing. Ground coffee loses flavor fast.
- Choose a medium or dark roast. These give that classic smooth, chocolatey Americano taste. Light roasts can taste sour when watered down.
- Use filtered water. Your coffee is mostly water, so if your tap water tastes off, so will your coffee.
- Do not use boiling water. It can make the coffee taste burnt and bitter.
Easy Americano Variations
- Americano with milk (white Americano): Add a splash of warm milk or cream. In the UK, many cafes will ask if you want it black or white.
- Vanilla Americano: Stir in 1 to 2 tsp of vanilla syrup.
- Honey cinnamon Americano: Add 1 tsp honey and a pinch of cinnamon. This is my cozy winter version.
- Red eye: Add a shot of espresso to regular drip coffee instead of water, for an extra strong wake up.
- Sparkling iced Americano: Pour espresso over ice and sparkling water. It sounds strange, but it is really refreshing.
What to Eat with an Americano?
Because an Americano is bold and not sweet, it goes well with almost any breakfast. These are my favorite pairings:
- Buttery croissants or pastries. The rich butter balances the bitter coffee.
- Eggs and toast. A simple plate of scrambled eggs and toast with a black Americano is my perfect weekday breakfast.
- Banana bread or muffins. Anything a little sweet is great next to a strong coffee.
- Dark chocolate. A small square with your afternoon Americano brings out the chocolate notes in the beans.
- Oatmeal with berries. A lighter option that still feels filling.
Americano FAQs
Is an Americano stronger than regular coffee?
In caffeine, a double shot Americano has a bit more than an average cup of drip coffee. In taste, it feels bolder and richer, but it is not as strong as a straight shot of espresso.
Does an Americano have milk in it?
No, a classic Americano is just espresso and hot water. You can add milk if you like, and many people do.
How many calories are in an Americano?
A black Americano has almost no calories, usually under 15. Milk, cream, sugar and syrups add calories.
Can I make an Americano without an espresso machine?
Yes. A Moka pot, an AeroPress or instant espresso powder all work well. The taste is slightly different, but still very good.
Why does my Americano taste bitter?
Bitterness usually comes from water that is too hot, coffee ground too fine, or an espresso shot that ran too long. Try slightly cooler water and a shot of about 25 to 30 seconds.
What is the best coffee for an Americano?
A medium or dark roast espresso blend works best. Look for tasting notes like chocolate, caramel or nuts on the bag.
Final Thoughts
Once you learn how easy an Americano is, you will save a lot of money on cafe runs. Start with a double shot and twice as much hot water, then adjust until it tastes just right to you. Whether you use a fancy machine or a simple Moka pot, a good cup is only a few minutes away.
